How to care for the skin after laser hair removal

If you are spending the money to have laser hair removal, you should do everything you can between sessions to ensure your skin stays healthy. While the procedure may only take a few minutes, you should still take care of the area to recover quickly and avoid further discomfort.

1. Check the area for any abnormal reactions.

Your skin will be red and possibly swollen, but the pain should be minimal. A cold compress can help soothe the area immediately after laser hair removal.

2. Apply moisturizing cream to the treated area.

This may soothe any redness, but it also helps keep your skin healthy between treatments. Antibacterial lotions are not necessary and cause dryness. Ask your clinician to recommend a product if you do not have something handy.

3. Wait a couple of hours before showering after treatment.

When you do shower, soap and other skin products are perfectly fine to use. Just avoid rubbing the area dry--instead, pat it dry with a soft towel. Underarm areas that have been treated should be cleaned with alcohol every few hours for the first day.

4. Start shaving the area after 3 or 4 days have passed. Plucking, waxing and bleaching should be avoided altogether.

Just take care not to irritate the area while shaving. Harsh soaps and shaving gels may cause your skin to dry out.

5. Stay out of the sun. Even a small amount of sun exposure can cause severe burns and irritation.

If you cannot avoid the sun, use the highest SPF sunscreen possible at all times. Remember that you cannot have additional laser treatments with even the smallest amount of color added to your skin.

6. Scrub the treated area with a gentle exfoliating soap to help with the shedding process.

Your hair will gradually shed for a few weeks following treatment, and exfoliating can help this process along.

7. Continue to care for your skin even after the redness and shedding stops.

The healthier your skin is for your next treatment, the more successful it will be. Keep exfoliating and using moisturizer.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

The number of laser hair removal treatments required depends upon your skin type, hair coloring, coarseness of the hair, depth of the hair follicle and the size of the area that need be treated.
  • Generally, 80% - 90% of good candidates will need at least 4 to 6 laser hair removal treatments spaced 6 - 10 weeks apart to experience 70% to 90% hair reduction. The cycle of hair growth has three phases and laser is killed in the active growing phase. 4 to 6 treatments are needed to target ALL hair in the active growth phase.

  • After 4 - 6 treatments or so, patients should experience 70% to 90% of hair reduction. But some clients may require additional treatments because of skin type, hair coloring and genetic factors.

  • After all initial laser hair removal treatments, many patients still need the maintenance sessions once or twice a year for image ideal.

  • Laser hair removal can cause more hair growth, is it true?

In some women, laser hair removal on the face can cause a paradoxical increase in hair growth! This occurrence has been reported by consumers on various forums, although it has not yet been medically proven.
Laser hair removal cause more hair growth is a rare occurrence and appears to happen only when treating woman's face, Very few to men's back / shoulders / upper arms. Usually, this happens more often on darker skin types (type IV and darker) when treating fine or vellus hairs, and at somewhat low settings.

Now, medicine still can not explain this phenomenon, We can only using the correct laser to prevent it. So be sure that the person who is doing your treatment knows if you are at risk and how to prevent more hair growth

How to get laser hair removal on light colored hair?

Lasers are generally regarded as a safe and effective method of removing hair and have been commercially available since the mid-1990s. The light energy that causes localized damage is absorbed most effectively by darker objects, so the ideal candidate will have light skin and dark hair. However, the procedure can be performed on light colored hair.

    1. Expect laser treatments to be less effective on light-colored hair, especially for darker skin. Because this type of hair has little pigment, it will not absorb much of the laser energy.
    2. Consider laser hair removal for light-colored hair only if you also have light skin. Skin that is darker than your hair will make this option impractical for you.
    3. Avoid the sun and tanning products completely prior to the treatments. You want the contrast between your hair and skin to be as great as possible.
    4. Use lasers with large spot sizes and a short pulse width to compensate for the lack of pigment. The best choice should be an alexandrite laser. It has the largest spot size (up to 18 mm, depending on the model) and the shortest wavelength (755 nm), which is best for light colored hair.
    5. Receive a greater number of treatments. Laser hair removal normally requires at least 4 sessions but 5 to 8 will usually be needed for light colored hair because of the reduced effectiveness of the laser.

How to get laser hair removal treatment on dark skin

It's very challenging for a practitioner to perform laser hair removal on someone with dark skin. That's because the melanin pigment, on the surface of your skin or epidermis, absorbs light. So, it can actually steal the laser light from getting beneath the epidermis to the real problem area. The laser may also injure the skin. You must have a highly skilled practitioner

Find a practitioner with experience performing laser hair removal on people with darker skin.

You need someone who is skilled at using different lasers -- the Diode laser, Alexandrite laser and the Nd:YAG laser.

Discuss the procedure during a consultation.

Talk to the practitioner about your skin. Have him prove his ability to choose the right laser with the right energy.

Protect the skin's surface by cooling it before using the laser.

The practitioner can use a contact cooling method and apply a chilled plate or a spray to your skin.

Use lasers with the longest wavelength of light.

Skin with melanin will absorb short wavelengths, so the doctor needs to use a longer wavelength to get through the epidermis. The skin may still absorb the light, but not to the degree of short wavelengths.

Alter the laser's pulse duration during the treatment.

The practitioner may use longer pulse duration for thicker hairs and leave the light on for a shorter period of time to remove thinner hairs.

Have at least three treatments for the best results.

Your practitioner will set up your personal treatment plan.

Apply a cold compress after treatment to soothe the bumps or redness that may appear.

3 Steps avoid risks of home laser hair removal system

As with any laser hair removal treatments on the skin, the consumer should make sure to note all warnings and side effects and any allergies that they may have, before purchasing such kits. Laser hair removal at home kits could end up burning the skin, scarring the skin and cause loss of pigmentation of the skin, especially darker skin tones. There are three steps to avoid side effects of home laser hair removal systems

Step 1. Buying an FDA approved product

This means that the product you are about to use has been testing thoroughly for consumer safety which greatly reduces the risk of any complications or undesired side effects.
But none of them are FDA approved for laser facial hair removal at home. They are intended to be used for areas of the body below the neck and not on the face. There are two home hair removal device be approved by FDA, Silk'n™ and Reviews for Tria home system.

    Step 2. Following Instructions

Tria and Silk'n home hair removal device come with built in safety features. Follow manufacturer guidelines as a minimum and err on the conservative side when using any laser system.
The instructions will include reminding patients that dark skin tones are not ideal for laser hair removal since the whole method relies on the properties of light being attracted by darker pigments. Light skinned people with dark hair are the ideal. Anyone with tanned, to brown, to dark skin should avoid laser treatment.

    Step 3. Using Common Sense

Following manufacturer guidelines and buying FDA approved products really are common sense. But don't stop there, if, at any moment during use, there is growing pain or discomfort it would be wise to discontinue use and seek the help of a medical professional if it is anything serious. Also, in the rare even that burns or blisters do appear it is a good idea to seek medical advice immediately to avoid permanent scars.

5 Steps avoid laser hair removal side effects in clinic

Laser hair removal side effects do exist, but almost all forms of hair removal have some side effects. These are 5 steps will help you avoid the side effects of laser hair removal process.

Step 1 : Find a good laser hair removal clinic

Make sure that you go to clinic that has the correct accreditation and is properly licensed to operate the laser.
Also make sure that the person that undergoes the process of the laser hair removal is a good technician, they may be more expensive than others but it is best that you get your laser hair removal process done without any complications.

Step 2 : Find a good laser hair removal technicians

A very good practitioner will determine your skin type before the laser removal process takes place. You should ask the technician questions like how the laser might be affected by your skin type.

Step 3 : Make sure the clinic makes exceptions for your skin type

Discuss everything with the clinic about your skin type and be sure to inform them if you have a sensitive skin. A good laser hair removal clinic will take your skin type into account when they are preparing to do laser hair removal on you.

Step 4 : Avoid certain harmful medications

At least 2 months before taking the treatment, avoid using any photosynthesizing medicines. The use of Accutane or tetracycline may highly aggravate the side effects of laser hair removal.

Step 5 : To avoid fever blister formation, especially on the upper lip, make sure that you take an anti viral medication

3 Ways reduce pain of laser hair removal treatment

Generally laser hair removal is not much more painful and It resembles a rubber band snapping the skin. 90% of patients can easily overcome. However the remaining 10% of patients may be more sensitive for laser hair removal treatment. The pain that may be associated with hair removal by a laser depends on a number of factors.
These include the sensitivity of a patient's skin, the type of laser equipment being used, and whether the procedure is being correctly performed. But the pain was short-lived and the pain associated with laser hair removal as being similar to or less than the pain associated with waxing.
There are three ways to reduce the pain of laser hair removal treatment:
    1. The most effective way is use topical anesthetics cream. Topical anesthetics typically come in a gel form and once rubbed on they reduce the obvious amount of pain.
    2. Over-the-counter medications are another way to effectively eliminate or reduce the amount of pain felt. These over-the-counter medicines are inexpensive and easy way to control the pain. As always before any medical procedure, inform the doctor of any medications you are taking before your treatment begins.
    3. Another secret of reduce the pain is avoiding exposing the treated area to the sun for one week before your laser hair removal treatment.

The quack claims for laser hair removal treatment

    "Painless" or "Virtually Painless"

Overall, laser hair removal is not pain, but the patient is uncomfortable. It feel like a rubber band snapping the skin. Of cause it is also dependant upon your pain threshold and skin or hair type. The hurt is less for people with lighter skin tones and finer hair

    "Permanent " or "100% Permanent"

The facts : There is no 100% guaranteed permanent for laser hair removal. It can reduce hair counts 40% to 80% even ideal candidates with light skin and dark hair.
As to date, there is no laser equipment that has been approved by the FDA for permanent hair removal. Hair growing back at some point is still possible, whether it's a reduced amount, finer version, or combination of both.

    "Guaranteed 0% Regrowth"

Nobody knows for sure what the regrowth rates are. Some people notice regrowth after several months or years, while others find they never have to hair removal again. The average experience is 70%-80% reduction in hair growth if you do a full 4-6 course laser hair removal treatment.

"Laser Hair Removal Ahead Of Electrolysis"

It is not always the laser hair removal ahead of electrolysis.

Not all types of skin are suitable for laser hair removal, Electrolysis is generally suitable for all hair and skin types. Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal which has been scientifically proven to result in permanent hair removal, but it is very painful and has the risk scars.
The overall cost of laser hair removal is much lower than electrolysis although the cost per session for laser hair removal is far in excess of that for electrolysis.

Risk, Side Effect, Complication of Laser Hair Removal

Risk, Side Effect, Complication of Laser Hair Removal

    1. Normal, Rare, Temporary, Permanent side effects
    2. Hyper pigmentation, Hypo pigmentation, Reddening after treatment, Blistering of skin
    3. Burns of skin, Post operative crusting, Wound infection, Scarring
    4. Darkening of tattoos, Injury to eye

    1. Normal side effectsItching, during treatment ; Redness for up to 3 days ; Swelling (around mouth of follicle) for up to 3 days ; Pain, tingling, feeling of numbness (cold spray)
    2. Rare side effects

Crusting/scab formation (on ingrown hairs) ; Bruising ; Purpura (purple coloring of the skin) on tanned area ; Infection ; Burns of skin ; Temporary pigment change (hypo-pigmentation hyper-pigmentation)

      Temporary side effects

The temporary effects eventually go away with days, weeks, or even months, including

    Permanent side effects

    Hyper pigmentation

Whatever the type of laser used chances are there that there may be hyper pigmentation of skin after exposure to lasers. In this condition the skin is darkened as a result of increased pigment deposition. Usually Dark or tanned skin is more prone to develop this. A good news is that it can be readily treated with the use of bleaching agents and is a temporary.

    Reddening after treatment

The superficial skin is reddened after continuous laser exposure. It is one of the minor laser hair removal side effects and its duration depends upon the depth and degree of dermal wound. Effective cooling and use of appropriate exposure time during the procedure has minimized this complication.

    Blistering of skin

The skin may be blistered after the laser hair removal procedure, the case may be the use of higher fluence for a darker skin type. Tissue cooling should be performed through a contact chill tip or cryogen spray to protect the skin. These measures serve to protect the skin from excessive thermal abuse. With the introduction of new and efficient cooling devices these common side effects have been mostly taken care of.

    Burns of skin

Burns is very rare and they are usually the work of less qualified technicians. It can be painful, but burns will heal with appropriate.

    Post operative crusting

10% of patients, treated for laser hair removal with long-pulsed ruby and alexandrite lasers may develop crusting. This is usually due to repeatedly over treating an area with laser. In this case appropriate postoperative care is strongly recommended in order to avoid an otherwise inevitable skin crusting.

    Wound infection

Wound infection is uncommon after laser procedures and may be noted in only those cases in which the epidermis has been damaged. Infection can be caused by any of the various pathogens, viral, fungal or bacterial. Herpes simplex virus might reactivate in some patients. This can be effectively controlled by application of antibiotic and anti viral creams as prophylactic medication after the procedure.

    Scarring

Cosmetic scarring has been the most feared consequence of laser hair removal but thanks to the new technology of Q switched and pulsed lasers that uses the principle of selective photothermolysis, the risk of scarring is greatly reduced. This may result directly after a laser procedure or as a result of an infection occurring afterwards. The risk of scarring is minimal with pulsed hair removal laser systems. Different factors like number of times exposed and laser used determine the intensity and extent of scarring.

    Darkening of tattoos

Cosmetics and tattoos using ferric oxides are converted into ferrous oxides by the lasers and black insoluble pigment is produced within the skin. This can be avoided easily by washing the eyeliner, lip liners or brown liners before the laser treatment and carefully avoiding the tattoos

    Injury to eye

Laser eye safety is extremely important during any procedure involving lasers. The direct or indirect exposure of eyes to laser irradiation can lead to ocular complications.

The lasers can pass through cornea lens and cause lesions of choroid and retinal vasculature. These may occur via direct or indirect ocular exposure to laser irradiation. Potential damage is wavelength-specific. Thus, wavelength-specific laser safety eyewear must be worn by both operators and patients.

    Conclusion

Laser hair removal is normally a quiet safe technique and above mentioned side effects are very rare and their chances are nearly zeroed in an person having ideal candidate like properties.

The side-effects can be further minimized by having proper knowledge of the procedure and selecting a good laser hair clinic and a well reputed physician who takes care of clients after treatment difficulties.

7 advantages and 7 disadvantages of laser hair removal

    1. Laser hair removal is more safety if done in a right and performed by skilled specialists.
    2. Laser hair removal have a high level of effectiveness. The majority of consumers have amazing results and even permanent hair elimination. You can see the result immediately.
    3. Laser hair removal is cheerful, the skin will not be harmed and It's almost painful, It is feel like rubber band snapping the skin.
    4. The treatment of laser hair removal can be taken on the largest portions such as the legs, back and chest in one session.
    5. Laser hair removal fits to each body part, including face, bikini, breast and other sensitive zones.
    6. If there is re-growth after laser hair removal, It will be finer and lighter in texture as compared to before.
    7. Laser hair removal is harmless while compared with electrolysis and waxing.

7 disadvantages of laser hair removal treatment Consumer will be needed at least 4-6 treatments.
  • Laser hair removal is not beneficial for red, blonde and gray hair.

  • Laser hair removal may cause many skin diseases such as discoloration of skin or burning of the skin.

  • You must protected your eyes during the process of laser hair removal.

  • Laser hair removal is quite expensive. The prices can be about $500 per laser hair removal.

    1. Scientific facts and research is yet restricted and claims cannot be completely proved.
    2. Laser hair removal is not preferred for those persons who have skin tan or darker skin tones. The effectiveness of laser hair removal depends on skin's color and It's still impossible to avoid the risk of skin burn.

Laser Hair Removal is not perfect if one has :

    • Diabetes
    • Cardiovascular system disorders
    • Pregnancy
    • Skin Disorders
    • Ontological Skin Disorders
    • Infection disorders
    • Newly sunburn or very dark sunburn
    • Below the age of 17

Factors will affect laser hair removal result

        1. Skin Type

Skin type is the most important factors to affect your laser hair removal results. Different skin tones will have different results.

Light skin : The best candidates for laser hair removal.

There are varying degrees of light skin. However, no matter what type of light skin you have, you are the best candidate for any form of laser hair removal. You will receive the best results almost immediately of any other skin type and will also require fewer treatments. Fewer treatments are necessary.

Medium skin : The color of your hair is the determining factor.

However, even the best medium skinned candidates will still run a risk of their results being less favorable and needing more treatments than a light skinned candidate.

Dark skin : It is bad results for dark skin perhaps.

Dark skinned will be the most likely have a bad outcome, They must need far more treatments than light skin and medium skin. They also require well-trained and widely experienced practitioners to achieve maximum results.

        2. Hair Color. It will help to determine the outcome of your laser hair removal.

Dark hair : The best color

Dark hair, such as black or dark brown is generally the best color of hair to laser hair removal. They contains the most pigmentation which allows the laser light to be absorbed to a greater extent. Also, dark hair is more coarse which will produce a better result.

Medium hair : Require more treatments

It will require more treatments but it is also a very good candidate for laser hair removal treatment. Medium hair is most often light or medium brown hair. It is more easier to treatment than lighter hair colors, but it may require more procedures than dark brown or black hair. Coarse medium hair will produce better and quicker results than those with fine medium hair.

Light hair : It is the hardest to work

There are many varying degrees of light hair, light hair contain phemelianin pigment which makes them less able to absorb the laser light. So light hair is the most difficult to treat and will require more time, money, and procedures than other hair color types. White or grey hair : Almost no effectiveness
White or grey hair contains no pigmentation and they can not absorb the laser light enough to heat the hair follicle. So it may be almost no effectiveness for laser hair removal with grey or white hair.

        3. Hair Cycle

Impacts laser hair removal procedure is hair growth, but it is not all hair are on the same growth cycle even if the hair is in the same area of the body. Therefore you will almost always need more than one procedure to completely treatment one area.

        4. External Factors

External factors can also affect the outcome of laser hair removal procedure.
Tanning or sun exposure : All laser hair removal candidates should be at their lightest skin tone at the time of treatment. Having even the slightest tan can make it harder for the laser light to pass through your skin in order to heat the hair follicle.
Being a light skinned person with a light tan makes the treatment more difficult than being a darker skinned person who has no tan or sun exposure at all. Your practitioner may even give you a topical bleaching cream to apply in the days or weeks before your appointment and regular sunscreen use is recommended.
Herpes : The heat from the laser light can cause a herpes infection to become active if it is in the location of the area to be treated.
History of scarring : A history of abnormal scarring can lead to scarring directly from your procedure.
Scarring is usually not of high concern to those that do not have this kind of history, but if you do then you should discuss it with your practitioner before the procedure begins.

        5. Laser Parameters

        Wavelength

Alexandrite 755 nm, it is most effective, but only safe on light skin.
Pulsed diode array 810 nm, it is for light to medium type skin.
Nd YAG 1064 nm, it is for darker skin.

        Pulsewidth

Longer pulsewidths may be safer for darker skin and shorter wavelengths are more effective in removing hair.

        Width of the laser beam

Larger spot sizes help make treatments faster and more effective.

        Fluence or energy level

Skin bleaching agents, such as 4% hydroquinone, are sometimes used by people in this group to lighten the skin as much as possible. This is done to make the laser treatment as effective as possible and reduce the risk of burning the skin. This ethnic group has an increased risk of hyperpigmentation.
